it's arbor day
~
Today is Arbor Day. If you live in the district and are looking for a way to give back to the city and the environment Casey Trees is a wonderful organization that is working to increase the urban canopy. DC's Mayor is also working to make the city even greener. He has announced plans to have a 40 percent tree canopy in the district by 2035. Now that's something that makes us all breathe a little easier!

garden of earthly delights
~
I have single-handedly revived a gifted basil plant that was on the brink of death. I'm feeling very confident in the almost emerald color of my thumb. The whole situation (plus this article from the New York Times) has got me thinking about growing my own indoor garden. Our apartment window has lovely natural light that would easily be able to sustain all the herbs we would need for a summer full of cooking.

Just because I'm gardening indoors doesn't mean I can't dream of all the fun I could have lazying about a garden using the items above. . .

Jeopardy always gives me such useful information. Today I learned that Marie Antoinette had Papillons*-French for butterfly- which their ears resemble.
*actually she had Phalène dogs- that had droopier ears...but who's counting- clearly not Jeopardy.

I saw it on J.crew and my life flashed ((fashionably)) before my eyes. I would wear it now with dark jeans and sky high heals and later with trousers and flats.

musing about museums
~
I love museums and it delighted me to no end to stumble upon two great museum related items yesterday. The above image is a collection of those cute little admissions pins you get upon entering a museum...they are like trophies.

The second is slightly less high brow. Time posted an article of Curious Collections: Offbeat Museums Around the World. It's entertaining and a little surprising what people will commemorate with a museum. For example. . .

and my personal favorite...

steal her style
~
It may appear that I have an Olsen obsession (I do). When I saw these photos of Ashley Olsen's casual weekend style I knew I would have to recreate it for myself. Seeing as I am not a mogul I took a more thrifty approach to the outfit below:

weekend in pictures

~
I had a really great time in NYC this weekend. Highlights included The Standard Hotel's Biergarten where we ate pretzles the size of stop signs and drank reasonably priced German beers.
{image via here}
We enjoyed a nice stroll along the High Line and then stopped for snacks at the Chelsea Market (and by snacks I mean sample sale items and americanos from Ninth Street Espresso).

We had brunch at The Odeon in TriBeCa. I had lemon poppy seed and ricotta pancakes with mimosas. It felt very classic New York and the food and service was lovely.

bon week-end (part deux)
~
Apparently NYC has become my second home. I'm off to the city again this weekend! We are staying at the Smyth with a group of friends in honor of (deux) birthdays. I'm very excited to try the Thompson Hotel Group's TriBeCa location.

As i was researching hotels I found another place I'm excited to try when my husband an I  go to NYC for a quick-and cheap- getaway. The Jane is in a great location that looks like the set of a Wes Anderson movie. The rooms are tiny...but I don't do well with a lot of space (thus the studio apt).

Bon vivant
~
Bon vivant: noun  French, literally, good liver
a person having cultivated, refined, and sociable tastes

I don't think there is anyone 'of a certain age' that I adore more than Carman Dell'Orefice.
So breathtaking.

a room of ones own
~
My husband and I live in a 500 square foot apartment. Needless to say, there is not a lot of room to oneself. A long time ago we saw a rousing Trading Spaces on TLC. The gentleman wanted his own room...a room he dubbed his "boom boom room" Since then my husband has always dreamed of having his own "boom boom room' to do all the things I find annoying (listen to records| craft beer| drink beer| watch sporting events| talk to his friends). Needless to say i'm pro "boom boom room" so I created one perfect room of his own. ((click to enlarge))

turban talk
~
Okay- I have a secret. I love the 1940's turban and I desperately want to wear one. I know there was a failed attempt to bring them back in 2008- I DON'T CARE.   I need a turban.

I have a few concerns:
  1. They are very difficult to pull off. . . (i'm talking to you, SJP)
  2. I have rather dark skin and very dark hair and I already have a terrible time getting through airports.
  3. Is it culturally insensitive?
  4.  Miuccia Prada could not make the turban chic- does that mean it's simply not chic?
  5. Will I be too warm- I rarely wear hats and it's spring? What about hat head?
Here are some images that make me want to give the turban a try.

revelation through concealment*
~
One of the great perks of hanging out with hip, artistic people is that you get invited to hip, artistic events. Last week my husband and I went to the opening of the Christo exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I was already acquainted with the larger than life art of Christo and his late wife Jean-Claude. Through research this past week I've really begun to adore their creativity and the audacity it must take to create such massive temporary works of art.
